PrOACT Toolset

When making an important decision, one that will impact some part of your life, such as your work, your family or your health, you need a decision-making process that increases the likelihood of realising a successful outcome.

PrOACT, a 5-step decision-making process devised by John Hammond, Ralph Keeney and Howard Raiffa and described in their book, Smart Choices, is a simple, thorough and effective way of consistently making good decisions.

This Toolset consists of 6 videos: an introduction and 5 lessons, each describing a step of the PrOACT process.

Introduction

The following video outlines the PrOACT process.

Step 1 -Problem

If we are to make good choices, we must define what is called the Decision Problem, the problem that is forcing us to make a decision.

Step 2 – Objectives

Understanding our decision’s objectives will 1) help us to determine what information we need to make our decision, 2) help us to explain our choice to others and 3) help us to determine the decision’s importance, so that we know how much time and effort to spend on making it.

Step 3 – Alternatives

Alternatives are the raw ingredients of decision-making. This presentation describes 6 ways in which to create alternatives that are based on the Decision Objectives identified in Lesson 2.

Step 4 – Consequences

Having identified our decision Objectives and the various Alternatives on which we will base our decision, we are ready to start making some choices. To be able to do this, we first need to understand the Consequences of selecting each Alternative and how well this choice will satisfy our decision Objectives.

Step 5- Trade-offs
